Durante las últimas dos décadas, el sector forestal uruguayo ha tenido un crecimiento exponencial y ha estado principalmente orientado a la producción de pulpa de celulosa y madera aserrada. En este contexto, los problemas sanitarios se presentan como una fuerte amenaza a la productividad de las casi 680.000 ha de Eucalyptus, el género más plantado. Puccinia psidii es el agente causal de la enfermedad conocida como roya del eucalipto. Este patógeno es nativo de América del Sur y América Central y fue descrito por primera vez sobre Psidium guajava en Brasil en 1884. Desde entonces ha sido reportado en un amplio rango de hospederos dentro de la familia de las mirtáceas. Es considerada una seria amenaza para Eucalyptus ya que causa daños severos en árboles jóvenes. En Uruguay, la enfermedad ha sido encontrada en Eucalyptus globulus, E. grandis y mirtáceas nativas. |

An outbreak of poisoning by Lantana camara occurred in cattle when a herd sought refuge in a Eucalyptus forest heavily infested by this plant. The animals showed apathy, elevated serum activities of hepatic enzymes, severe photosensitivity, jaundice, hepatomegaly and nephrosis. After a clinical manifestation period of 2-15 days, 74 out of 170 heifers died. The main histological changes were random hepatocellular necrosis, cholestasis, biliary proliferation and, in one animal, centrilobular necrosis. Immunostaining for Caspase 3 detected scattered apoptotic hepatocytes. © 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd. |
